New home gardening tips for summer 2026

Just like your new build home, a new build garden is a blank canvas for you to shape and style to suit your lifestyle. Designing your perfect new-build garden is exciting, but it can also feel a little overwhelming.

Garden designer and outdoor expert, Cara Addison, has shared her top tips for making your outdoor space sing all year round.

A helpful pointer towards planters

Planters and raised beds can be a great place to start when creating your new build garden. Planters immediately add style and character without breaking the bank, while raised beds can create different zones in your garden, giving you the flexibility to grow vegetables, plants or flowers.

Consistency is key throughout your garden

Structuring your borders can amplify the design and layout of a new garden. Repeating your planting style, planting one, three or five of the same plant in order, will create symmetry and give your garden a cohesive flow.

Hydrangea Limelight is an excellent plant for beginners, and for new build owners, because it’s both low maintenance and thrives in almost all soil types. Geum’s also work well in a bordered garden, as they add height and are generally pest-proof, which is perfect for long summer days and nights when you don’t want to be disturbed by bugs.

Keep your space simple, classic and durable

Buying established plants or trees is a great way to add immediate impact and height to your garden. Maple, Amelanchier, or Blossom trees can be used to create focus points in your garden, adding character and significantly decreasing the time it will take to look and feel mature.

For a stylish, low-maintenance garden, hardy Geraniums such as Rozanne are a great option. They die in winter and regenerate the following year, ensuring your long-term garden goals can be met with ease!
