Meet The Team Wayne Eccles

What is your current role at Miller Homes?

I am a Senior Site Manager for Miller Homes in the North West, where I oversee the building of our Millers Green development in Morecambe.

My main responsibility is to ensure all aspects of the build programme are delivered to specific financial, quality, construction and safety targets and standards. I also manage all sub-contractors and any materials on site, whilst making sure site completion is on schedule.

When did you join Miller Homes?

I joined the company in 2002 as an assistant site manager in St Helens. I then progressed to site manager after four years with the company and was thrilled to be promoted to senior site manager eight years later.

What has been your biggest achievement during your time with Miller Homes?

Over the years I have been lucky enough to be recognised for my work so it’s difficult to choose one! I achieved my first NHBC Pride In Job Award, a prestigious industry award which recognises a site manager’s commitment to building homes safely and to the highest standard, in 2010 for the work on a site in Buckshaw Village in Chorley. Over the years, I have obtained four PIJ awards; my most recent was in June this year for the Millers Green development.

What do you find most challenging about your job?

Every day I face different challenges as the construction industry is always changing with many external factors influencing the day-to-day tasks, but as a team we all pull together and work hard to resolve any issues which may arise.

What do you like about your job?

I enjoy the variety in my job; legislation is always changing which means I am constantly learning and developing my skills set. Working to tight schedules can sometimes be stressful but I enjoy the pressure and having the challenge. One of the most satisfying parts of my job is seeing the look of excitement and happiness on a customer’s face when they are handed their keys to their new home and knowing we went beyond their expectations to deliver on our business philosophy, ‘the Miller Difference’.

Why did you choose this career?

I’ve always liked the physical and constructive elements of building; however this role is the perfect fit as I am also able to grow my technical skills set whilst learning on the job.   Overseeing all aspects of what is entailed in building a new home, from the initial groundwork right through to completion, was something that excited me.

What advice would you give someone looking for a career in your area of work?

Working in construction can be challenging so be prepared to work hard and continue to learn as there are always changes to building methods and standards.  However, the rewards and job satisfaction make it all worth while.

If you could live anywhere in the UK, where would you like to move?

It would have to be Keswick in Cumbria because of its stunning scenery.
