A more relaxing path for your new home!
Moving home is a very exciting time – perhaps finally having that much needed extra space or getting to know your new neighbours - but the actual physical move can be stressful.
There’s the long list of people you need to notify from the electricity supplier to your bank doctor and dentist. Then there’s the challenging task of having to organise all your worldly possessions and transport them to a new location in a short space of time.
Here are some top tips to help you get organised and make the move a little smoother...
1. Call on the professionals
Unless you only have a minimum amount of belongings get professional help with your move. It will relieve some of the responsibility of packing and heavy lifting and so long as you use a reputable supplier will insure your goods en-route from any damage.
We would recommend using a company that is a member of the British Association of Removers and book them in advance if possible after getting a few quotes to compare.
2. Don’t leave it to the last minute
Use the move as an opportunity to have a clear out of unwanted belongings. You could give them to friends or a charity shop or maybe even have a car boot sale or sell items online.
Work out how many boxes you need as well as other items such as bubble wrap tape and sealable bags and stockpile old newspapers for a few weeks to use for lining boxes.
3. Think ahead
You’ll never have everything unpacked in one day so prioritise what you’ll need on arrival and what can wait. Pack your ‘essentials’ together and ensure you have easy access to them by having them loaded last. This should include items such as tea coffee cups a kettle spoons a tea towel and some basic toiletries such as toilet roll and hand wash.
4. Pack sensibly
Start early – it always takes longer than you think – and don’t get distracted when you find old photographs or clothes.
Prioritise things that will need extra care with wrapping such as glassware or larger items like wardrobes and tables that will have to be dismantled in advance.
Start at the top of the house and take one room at a time. Label boxes with contents and what room they belong to – this should make it easier when it comes to unpacking – and don’t forget to mark breakables of heavy boxes to avoid accidents or injuries.
Line your packing boxes and wrap items individually using clean tissue paper for the first layer to prevent newspaper print leaving marks. It may be obvious but put the heavier items at the bottom and lighter items on top.
It’s bound to be hectic no matter how organised you are but hopefully following our advice will help the day go without a hitch.
Good luck with the move – we hope you enjoy your new home once you’ve unpacked and settled in.
