A Leicestershire couple, aged just 18 and 22, have credited sticking to a strict weekly budget and making use of buyer incentives with helping them to secure their first dream home.

Chloe Johnstone (18) and Callum Rey (22) fell in love with Stretton Glen development, in the pretty village of Great Glen, and decided to reserve a plot with Miller Homes as soon as one became available. With the average age of first time buyers now hitting 30, Chloe, a junior sales representative, and Callum, who is a painter and decorator, took drastic measures to save for their home. They limited their spending to just £50 a week while living with Chloe’s mum, and even cancelled a holiday together so they could put the money towards their deposit instead.

“Both of us get paid weekly so we put almost everything into our savings account,” explained Chloe.

“As well as this, we also used the Help to Buy scheme, which meant that we only needed a five per cent contribution towards the deposit and a 75 per cent mortgage. If there are other young people looking to buy, I’d definitely recommend starting a savings account, and finding out about all the offers available.”
