Varcity Wins Silver at the What House Awards
Miller Homes’ Varcity development in Edinburgh received a Silver award in the Best Regeneration category at the What House? Awards 2016.
Varcity, which is one of the housebuilder’s longest standing and largest developments, has been built over a period of 10 years and features a collection of over 850 residential properties located on the former brownfield site which was previously home to Edinburgh’s Telford College.
The development comprises three former campus sites which are being transformed into a successful and thriving new community close to Edinburgh’s city centre, offering homes for private sale, social housing and properties for mid-market rent.
Work is currently underway at Varcity North to restore the B Listed college building and create 21 apartments, which will see the building retain many of its original architectural features, including the stunning art deco frontage on the north façade, original stairs and iconic sculptures.
Creating positive socio-economic benefits within the locality was a key aspect of the planning process and this was achieved through proactive stakeholder engagement from the very beginning, As a result the local community has benefited from new amenities and apprenticeship opportunities for young unemployed people through Miller Homes’ support for the Get into Homebuilding programme.
Commenting on the development, the judges said:
“Miller Homes has successfully cemented the best of old and new with contemporary homes set around a stunning art deco building.
“Varcity North offers superb value in a development residents can be proud of.”
