A East Midlands-based Miller Homes site manager is celebrating after taking the top award in the company’s own annual Safety, Health and Environment Awards.

Garry Bowler, senior site manager at The Portlands in Chesterfield, was recently named ‘Best in Company’ for his hard work and dedication in driving home the leading housebuilder’s safety, health and environment ethos on his site.

Amongst other things, judges were particularly impressed by Garry’s total ownership of his development, as well as his management style which enabled him to get the best from his contractors and supporting teams.

Garry commented: “I am delighted to have been named Best in Company in these important awards.  As well as protecting those working on site, I firmly believe that good health and safety practice can make a big difference to the smooth operation of a site and I do my best to ensure that my team’s performance in this area is as good as it can be.  To receive recognition for having been successful in what I set out to achieve is really rewarding.”

Chris Endsor, Chief Executive of Miller Homes, said:  “These awards, now in their third year, serve to recognise and reward our employees on site who make a real difference in improving standards in safety, health and environment.  We also hope that it helps to encourage all of our employees to contribute to making the workplace safer and healthier.

“Garry stood out because of his proactive approach and the creative initiatives he has implemented.  He has excelled in ensuring the commitment and buy-in of all who work on his site, and his skill in managing the challenges he is presented with has been exemplary.

“Well done to Garry – he should be proud.”

All Miller Homes sites were eligible for consideration in the awards, and were assessed on specific criteria designed to identify the best performing sites during a year-long judging period.

Keith Wishart, site manager at Bishops Park in Gateshead, and Kris Aitchison, site manager at Linlithgow Brae in West Lothian were runners up in the competition.
