Summer craft ideas for kids
Schools out for summer! Here are some easy craft ideas to help kids unleash their creativity this summer and keep boredom at bay.
Nature collages
One thing that’s great about summer is you can spend long evenings exploring nature and learning about local wildlife. Encourage your children to explore the garden or local parks to collect leaves, flowers, and twigs to make a collage. Once they’ve gathered their treasures, they can create beautiful nature collages. All you need is some paper, glue, and perhaps a bit of imagination. A great activity that not only nurtures creativity but also connects kids with the outdoors.
DIY bird feeders
Attracting and preserving wildlife is very important for encouraging a vibrant ecosystem and enhancing your garden, so why not try some DIY bird feeders? Using empty toilet paper rolls, spread peanut butter on the outside, and roll them in birdseed. Hang them up with some string and watch as birds come to enjoy the feast. This craft is simple, eco-friendly, and provides hours of bird-watching fun. You can also create a game, tracking all the various types of birds attracted to the feeder.
Painted rocks
Painting rocks is a simple yet fun activity for children and they can be used for many different things. Collect smooth, flat rocks from your garden or a nature walk, then with some acrylic paints or pens, your kids can turn these stones into colourful masterpieces. They can paint animals or insects such as ladybirds, tv characters or their very own designs. These painted rocks can be used to decorate the garden, as unique paperweights or even in their creative stories.
Homemade wind chimes
Enhance your garden or outdoor space with some homemade wind chimes, using items found around the house. Things like sticks, string, and various small objects like beads, shells, or old keys are all great for creating sound. Tie the objects to the sticks with string, ensuring they are close enough to touch and make sounds when the wind blows. Hang the wind chimes in your garden and enjoy the musical sounds of your unique homemade project.
Homemade scrapbooks
Collect some family memories and help your kids create a memento of their summer holidays with a homemade scrapbook. Give your kids with a blank book or sketch pad, markers, stickers, and some printed photos of their summer adventures. They can fill the pages with drawings, ticket stubs, leaves, and anything else that reminds them of their summer experiences, creating a keepsake they can cherish for years to come.
Garden stepping stones
How about adding a personal, homely touch to your garden with some DIY stepping stones. Mix up some plaster of Paris or concrete (which can be found at all local garden and DIY centres) and pour it into shallow moulds or even old pie tins. While it's still wet, let your kids have fun pressing in stones, shells, or maybe even their own handprints. Once everything's dried and set, these stepping stones will not only spruce up your garden paths but also bring a bit of your family's creativity to the outdoors!
