How To Give Your Tired Furniture A Spring Refresh
Upcycling is the process of transforming unwanted, old and run-down furniture into gorgeous pieces that look as good as new. Giving your furniture a new lease of life doesn't have to cost the earth - from changing handles on your kitchen cupboards, adding a fresh coat of paint, or simply sanding and varnishing your old, wooden family heirlooms - upcycling can be a quick, cost-effective and satisfying project.
If you're new to the world of upcycling, here are a few tips to help you.
No previous skills required
To take part in the upcycling revolution, you don't need to be a sculptor, interior designer or have an art-degree in your back pocket - anyone can join in. They key to this technique, however, is preparation, making sure your 'workspace' is clear and your tools are within arm's reach.
Get thrifty
Let your imagination run wild. Even the most curious if items in our homes can become a practical piece of furniture if treated carefully. Old, broke or tatty ladders with a lick of varnish or pastel paint can make a charming addition to any room as a set of shelves. Add potted plants, ornaments and books, to complete the look.
Instead of tearing our your whole kitchen to replace worktops and cupboard doors, stop by a second hand DIY shop and pick up a selection of handles to replace you old ones. It might seem like a small, inexpensive change, but it will make a big difference. Shaker-style handles in particular are a popular choice.
Scour Gumtree
Re-selling sites and auction halls could be your new best friend. These are spaces were unloved furniture such as mirrors, carpets and drawers are cast off at very reasonable prices. Don't forget the famous phrase, "one person's trash is another person's treasure."
Shabby chic
Not so long ago, the key trend for interiors was all about minimalism ad clean lines. Now, many homeowners favour a rustic, shabby-chic approach to their homeware to create a cosy and inviting space.
The much-loved shabby-chic look has a 'slightly worn' and vintage finish, making it the perfect aspiration for many 'upcyclers'. Part of the charm of re-used furniture is its rustic appearance and the idea that the furniture has a past, which is why your upcycling doesn't have to look perfect. In fact, hints of how it may have looked in its 'heyday' all add to the charm.
Get prepared
Finally, once you've found the perfect piece to work your magic on, the first step of any upcycling project is taking the time to prepare the surface. It's important to remove any dust, cobwebs and chipped old paint before you begin your work. A conventional duster, brush or piece of sandpaper will be ideal here, and they're usually tools you have lying around in the house or garage.
