Miller Homes Volunteers Build Homes And Hope In Malawi
Nineteen Miller Homes volunteers have returned home after a successful trip to Malawi with global development charity Habitat for Humanity Great Britain, building both homes and hope for some of the world's most vulnerable children and families.
The team of Miller Homes employees, which comprised a cross section of staff from all areas of the business, set out to Salima, Malawi on a Global Village Trip at the end of April. As well as taking part in the physical construction of the homes the Miller Homes team witnessed first-hand how a safe and secure home can benefit many aspects of life for the families and wider community.
The volunteers made fantastic progress in the construction of the homes and by day three the building work was already at roof height on the first two homes, with the Habitat for Humanity GB team having to bring forward preparatory works on the third home to allow the Miller Homes volunteers to start on its foundations.
As well as taking part in the physical build of the homes, the team immersed themselves in the local culture, engaging with the community and working alongside the families and children who would be occupying the much-needed Habitat homes.
The team successfully achieved their target and had all three Habitat homes constructed and ready for roofing by their fifth day in Malawi.
Chris Endsor, CEO of Miller Homes, said: "I am extremely proud of the hard work and dedication our group of Miller Homes volunteers have displayed while building homes for some of the world's most poverty stricken people. Providing them with a safe, secure place they can call home will be life-changing. Habitat for Humanity GB is a charity with close links to our industry and we are honored to support the work of such a great cause."
Tum Kazunga, CEO at Habitat for Humanity GB, said: "We are thrilled that Miller Homes returned to Malawi with Habitat for Humanity GB. Their continuous support and commitment to help some of the world's most vulnerable people is immeasurable. Their hard work and fundraising efforts have helped transform the lives of many families within the community of Salima. Every brick laid is a critical step to a new, better life."
Since 2016 Miller Homes has raised over £300,000 for Habitat for Humanity GB, with this year's volunteers contributing just over £43,000. A second trip is also planned, with senior members of the Miller Homes team joined by representatives from their key national partners in Malawi this month to help build more Habitat homes and support its WaSH (water sanitation and hygiene) programme.
Three teams from Miller Homes will also be participating in Habitat for Humanity GB's Hope Challenge, a two day competition in the Peak District in Derbyshire for companies in the homebuilding, property and construction industry.
