Top Tips For Spring Cleaning Your Home
The days are getting longer, the nights lighter and despite the unseasonably cold snap the first signs of spring are appearing around us. As the outside refreshes itself from the shackles of winter, albeit rather slowly, what better time to cleanse your interiors and declutter your home, getting it in to shape for the coming months?
Now is the perfect opportunity to clear out old belongings, pack away bulky winter clothing and tidy up your surroundings ahead of the new season. In this post, we share our top tips for achieving that all-important spring clean in your home:
- Declutter
The first step to spring cleaning your home should be to declutter your surroundings, throwing away or donating to charity the things you know longer need, want or wear. How many times have you promised yourself that you’ll wear the jacket that’s been hanging in your wardrobe for months? Spring is the ideal time to let those things go and refresh your living space.
Donating your unwanted items to your local homeless shelter is a great way to declutter and free up some room for any belongings you’ll be purchasing over spring and summer.
As a simple rule, you should make a pile of 10 things to keep, 10 to donate and 10 to throw away. You’ll be surprised by how quickly you achieve this, make sure you repeat the process as you gather more items to declutter throughout the home.
- Go room by room
A spring clean can seem like a monumental task to complete, especially if you’ve let your clutter build up over the winter. A great tip to make the task more manageable is to break it down room by room, tackling each area as a separate space.
You could even challenge yourself to complete each room within an allotted period, for example within the time it takes for 15 songs to play. Pop some music on, get organising and tidying, and you’ll be surprised by how fast you complete the task in hand.
- Get out the rubber gloves
No spring clean is complete without a good old-fashioned scrub down of all surfaces, table tops and communal areas. Grab your rubber gloves and anti-bacterial wipes and give your surroundings a deep clean to achieve the ultimate finish to your spring clean and ensure your house is ready for the coming season.
Whilst kitchens and bathrooms are areas that people tend to focus on when cleaning a home, you should not underestimate the importance of deep cleaning bedrooms, home offices and hallways, especially if you have young children and your home has a playroom that has the tendency to gather germs.
- Spring colours
Is your kitchen cupboard begging for a refresh? Or perhaps you started a project re-painting an old book shelf and got distracted over the winter? Use spring as a time to progress with the decorating projects you’ve always wanted to do. Adding a fresh lick of paint to your interiors or new accessories are brilliant ways to brighten up your home, making a room feel more put together and ready for the season ahead. Try pastel shades like powder pink, blue or pale grey for a fresh spring look.
- Fresh flowers and greenery
There’s nothing better than a fresh bunch of flowers or potted plant to add a vibrancy to your living space, especially as nature is brightening up outside. Whether you simply pick the fresh flowers from your garden and arrange them in a vase or invest in a styled bouquet from a florist, a floral arrangement will bring life into your room and accentuate your spring clean.
If flowers are not your preferred accessory, why not choose a potted plant or a cactus to decorate a shelf or fireplace? These plants can be bought inexpensively and are a great addition to any room, adding style as well as a pop of nature.
