Theatres in Wakefield and Dewsbury include the Dewsbury Little Theatre which hosts both amateur and professional drama, and music and theatre productions are also presented in Dewsbury's impressive Town Hall. Junction 27 Retail Park, around five miles to the north, includes a Showcase multiplex cinema, and there are several bars and inns in Thornhill, some offering programmes of live music.

Sport and leisure
There are several gyms and sports centres within easy reach of Calder View, including the Dewsbury Sports Centre, a little over a mile to the north, which includes a fitness suite, two sports halls offering a wide selection of instruction and activities, a 33m swimming pool and a spa with an aromatherapy room, sauna and steam rooms. The choice of golf courses in the area includes Dewsbury District Golf Club in Sands Lane, around a mile-and-a-half from the development. In addition, Thornhill is home to an archery club and a rugby team, the Trojans, who are in the Premier Division of the National Conference League.

Transport
Calder View has excellent public transport links. There are bus stops right outside the development offering services to the centre of Dewsbury and the surrounding area. Ravensthorpe Train Station, with direct services to Leeds, is just three-quarters of a mile away, and there is another train station in Dewsbury town centre. Both the M1 and the M62 are within a few minutes drive, and Leeds Bradford Airport is less than 15 miles away.

Shopping
There are Asda and Sainsbury's supermarkets within half a mile of Calder View, and a good selection of local shopping in Thornhill Lees, including off-licences, takeaways and a number of specialist shops. Thornhill Post Office is situated in Brewery Lane, directly across from the development. The major retail park at M62 Junction 27, around four miles to the north, includes Ikea, Next, Toys R Us and Habitat stores as well as several restaurants, and both Wakefield town centre and the White Rose shopping centres at Leeds are approximately seven miles away.

Health care
There are good health care facilities in easy reach of the development. The Brewery Lane Surgery, a full-time practice with three doctors, has branches in Brewery Lane, just a few minutes walk from Calder View, and in Warren Street, less than three-quarters of a mile away. There is a second medical practice at the Thornhill Lees Medical Centre, and a nearby pharmacy in Brewery Lane.

Education
There are two junior and infant schools in Thornhill, both within walking distance of Calder View, and the local secondary school, recently refurbished and modernised, is now a Science College. There is also a state selective grammar school at Heckmondwike, around three miles to the north.

    From the M1
    Leave the M1 at junction 40 and join the A638 (Wakefield Road) travelling west. At the roundabout two miles on, stay on the A638, then after a further mile-and-a-quarter, at the traffic lights turn left into Rushworth Road. Carry on through one set of traffic lights, then at the next bear left into Wilton Street (B6409). Cross the canal, and carry on for almost a mile, then at the mini-roundabout bear left on to Station Road. After crossing the flyover, take the first right turn into Brewery Lane, and just after crossing the canal, Calder View is on the right.

    From the M62
    Leave the M62 at junction 25 and join the A644 (Wakefield Road) travelling east. Carry on through Mirfield, and immediately after passing the landscaped roundabout with the entrance to Ravensthorpe Shopping Park on the left, at the lights turn left into Calder Road, which becomes Ravensthorpe Road. Pass the entrance to Ravensthorpe Railway Station, and approximately three-quarters of a mile further on turn left into Brewery Lane. The entrance to Calder View is on the left, just before the canal.
