Meet the Martin family
Meet the Martin family.
It’s safe to say discussions round the dinner table are a little different than most for this Scottish family. Project manager Jim Martin and his sons forklift truck operator Jim Martin Junior; joiner William Martin; joiner Shaun Martin; site manager Kenny Martin; daughter assistant site manager Laura Martin and grandson Ryan Scorrie are all keeping it in the family when it comes to a career in homebuilding.
Helping to build new homes across the UK, the Martin family, from Livingston, West Lothian, all either directly, or on a sub-contractor basis, work for national homebuilder, Miller Homes, with six members of the family all working on the same site together.
Jim senior was the first of the Martins to join the Miller Homes team in 2006 and has scooped a total of nine Quality Awards, five Seals of Excellence and one Regional Award in the prestigious NHBC Pride in the Job industry awards over the course of his career. In his current role as project manager at the Ferrygate Meadow development in North Berwick, he is responsible for overseeing the progress and quality on site, ensuring all health and safety standards are adhered to and interacting with colleagues and contractors.
Three short years later, son Jim junior joined the Miller Homes team as a forklift operator and has been with the company for 10 years, with Kenny joining five years ago and Laura three years ago. Both William and Shaun along with grandson Ryan work for sub-contractors who provide services to Miller Homes. Ryan is Jim’s first grandchild to work with Miller Homes, but with a total of 22 grandchildren in total, Jim believes Miller Homes could well be in for the arrival of even more Martins in the future.
Explaining more, he said: “We’ve always been such a close-knit family and when I started working at Miller Homes, it felt like I had become a part of another family too. Over the years, Miller Homes has been really loyal to me and you always feel like you’re a key part of the company. As a result, when my children started making steps towards developing their careers, it was natural for me to encourage them to look into a career with Miller Homes.
“They could see each day how much I enjoyed my job, so I think that might have helped to persuade them too. For me, the initial decision to encourage my children was more about keeping the family in work but as more and more of us joined the Miller Homes team and the company consistently proved their commitment and care, it became so much more.
“A career in housebuilding offers real variety. There aren’t many jobs where you get to see the impact of your work on people’s lives each day. It’s really rewarding to be able to help create dream homes for people, knowing they’ll get to enjoy them for years to come.”
Daughter Laura who works alongside her dad each day on the site explains how working together with your family isn’t for everyone, but the Martins make it work:
“People often ask us how we can work all together and whether there are any arguments, but I can honestly say that there aren’t. I guess it works so well for us because we have always had such a close family relationship and that love and respect reflects out on the site in our working life too. We are all really passionate about what we do and are constantly bouncing ideas off each other, so much so, that when we get home, it’s hard to not bring work talk to the dinner table - not that we mind!
“We’re a pretty big family and my son is already looking into the possibility of joining the Miller Homes team to gain work experience for a possible career in architecture, for example. So who knows, over the coming years, Miller Homes could well be set for even more Martins joining the team.”
With a total of 85 developments across the UK, Miller Homes has been responsible for building high quality new build homes for over 85 years.
Chris Endsor, Chief Executive of Miller Homes, commented: “Family is a strong aspect of our heritage at Miller Homes and is therefore important to us not just within the developments and neighbourhoods we create but it’s also an ethos we champion in the working environment too.
“Although we have staff working in various locations across the country both on site and within our offices, I’m very proud that we have such a close-knit and dedicated team creating high quality homes for our customers. The fact that many of our staff have worked with us for many years and are encouraging others within their families to join our team is testament to that.”
