How to grow a Victory Garden this National Gardening week

Recently, Pinterest searches for “Victory Garden” have risen by 156% - not surprising given there’s an increasing interest among us on how to lead a more sustainable life.

But what actually is a Victory Garden?

Simply put, a Victory Garden is a vegetable, fruit or herb patch planted on a private residence.

The term was coined when people began planting fruit and vegetables during World War I, and then again during World War II. The gardens helped to prevent food shortages and boosted morale among local neighbourhoods - by creating a community around food, those at home to feel they could also help to make a difference.

Fancy giving it a crack? The good news is, it’s as easy as finding a patch of sunny open space and prepping the area by removing any existing turf. Just like that, you’re ready to grow.

Now you’ve established the where, it’s time to think about the what. Seasoned gardeners may want to grow their offering directly from seeds, or you can opt for a starter plant to get ahead of the game - a great idea for those a little newer to gardening.

Pick a dry, mild day and plant your seeds in the soil according to their packet. If you’re using a starter plant, carefully remove from the original container, being extra gentle with the roots. Using a trowel, dig a small hole, pop the plant inside and fill with soil – be sure to cover all of the roots.

Once you’ve mastered the planting, you’ll need to water well to ensure healthy plant growth. Experts recommend a good soak every few days, with more frequent watering on hotter days.

And there you have it! Your Victory Garden is ready to go, and will give you the opportunity to produce chemical-free fruits and vegetables, help the environment and produce plenty to share with friends and family.
