Spare Room Goals
If you are lucky enough to have a spare room in your house, then you may wonder what you can do with it. If you never have overnight guests, do you really need a spare bedroom? And, if you don’t work from home, and don’t have anyone that is studying, that extra downstairs room may hardly ever get used.
We want you to make the most of your lovely home so here are some ideas on how you can make your spare room work best for you!
Time to be traditional
There has been a huge resurgence in more traditional hobbies lately, particularly amongst adults, so if you have embraced old favourites such as sewing, knitting, painting or model railway, why not dedicate an entire room to it. Décor can be kept simple, wall art created to complement the activities taking place in the room and, without too much effort, you have a dedicated room where you can retreat to and enjoy indulging in a little bit of what makes you happy.
And the best bit? You don’t have to tidy up at the end of every visit! Just leave your current work of art on the easel, your latest couture piece on the machining table; all ready for your next few minutes of spare time.
Music Maestro!
If you, or any member of your family, are a keen musician, designating a separate room to practice can aid concentration and save the rest of the family from being disturbed too much, especially if the instrument in question is rather loud! And, if it is loud, you could always look at soundproofing the room with relative ease.
If it’s a large instrument such as piano or drums, it may take up most of the space but if all you need is a music stand, somewhere to store and display instruments – guitars look particularly good when they are wall hung – then you could also make the room dual purpose perhaps?
Maybe a small desk in the corner for study, or a comfy chair and footstool for relaxing with the Sunday papers or a good book. The key to achieving those spare room goals is versatility, and this is a great example of making a room work for everyone.
Lights, Camera, Action!
Who wouldn’t love a cinema room in their home? You may think that larger rooms lend themselves to the more elaborate schemes with tiered seating and huge projector screens but, if you have a smaller room and perhaps a smaller budget, you can still create a room dedicated to watching big screen blockbusters.
Choose the comfiest seating you can find; large bean bags can be super comfy and are once again de-rigeur, and make sure that there is space to arrange them so that everyone gets a good view. If you can squeeze in a projector screen perfect, but if not, a large, wall hung TV can still create a great effect. And don’t forget the sound system. Many are available to suit a range of budgets and they can be linked to TVs or projectors to give you that cinema feeling.
Last but not least, remember the snacks. Perhaps you could incorporate a mini fridge or popcorn maker into the room so that you don’t even have to pop to the kitchen to replenish when the movie munchies strike!
Wonderful wardrobe
If it’s fashion that’s your passion, then how about creating a walk-in wardrobe. Whilst it would be fab to be all connected, a quick trip across the landing to a room for all your clothes and accessories is still a worthwhile one when you see some of the arrangements that can be created.
With open racking, shelving for shoes, dressing table and mirrors, it is a wonderful way to use a spare room and take pride in your investments. There are some great hints and tips available to help you get the right hanging space depth, the knowhow on shoe storage and work out how to cleverly conceal lighting so that the days of scrabbling around in dark cupboards are long gone.
However you decide to use your spare room, just take some time to think which family members could benefit from it most. It doesn’t have to be an expensive project, it doesn’t have to involve any building work but it does have to be fabulous!
