How to refresh your home for summer

As summer approaches and we experience lighter days and longer nights, it’s not uncommon to feel you want to give your home a refresh.

Brightening up your home for the warmer months doesn’t have to be expensive or time consuming. Just a few small tweaks here and there will do the trick.

We’ve put together some of our favourite tips as to how you can spruce up your home quickly and easily in time for summer.

Declutter

The first place to start when thinking of updating your home is to have a good declutter. There’s no better feeling than your home being in order, so it’s worth giving up a Saturday for, or roping in the family to lend a hand instead of your usual lazy Sunday afternoon.

Streamlining your living space will help you discover any packed nooks and crannies that can be reinvented with some simple décor and reintroduced as a feature in your home. A clean and tidy space makes it much easier to envision what you’d like to change within each room.

Paint

Painting your walls is an easy way to brighten any room.

Newly painted walls not only look clean and fresh but, but can completely transform the look of a room with minimum effort.

For summer, try to stick to light colours to make your home feel bigger and more modern. Minimalist, scandi chic has been an interiors trend for a while, with no sign of it disappearing, so opt for off whites and soft beiges if you want to introduce this trend into your own home this summer.

Accessories

Changing your home’s accessories or adding in some extras can be an easy way to completely switch up your decor. Some simple ideas include cushions, throws, blankets, wall hangings, shelving, side table trinkets and indoor plants.

Another option would be to switch up your bed linen. Think fresh colours, bright florals and vibrant patterns to brighten up your bedroom. Or, if you’d prefer a softer, more coastal feel, you could go for blue, green or white bedding.

Don’t forget the garden

Remember to make your outdoor living area an extension of your home.

Again, start with a declutter and a clean. Then, make any repairs that may need completed before you start adding any additional plants, décor or garden furniture.

Creating a tranquil outdoor area is often affordable with simple coloured lights, beanbags and lanterns, as well as outdoor rugs or cushions.

Creating a small fruit, vegetable or herb patch is also a fun area you could introduce into your garden that children can get involved in.
