10 Fun Christmas Activities to Enjoy at Home this Festive Season

‘Tis the season where having festive fun and spending time with loved ones is at the top of everyone’s wish lists. Although celebrations this year will be different, you can still get in Christmas spirits by doing activities at home with your bubble.

From baking festive treats and making DIY table decorations, to staging your own photoshoot and snuggling up with your favourite Christmas film and snacks, there’s so much fun to be had at home this Christmas.

Here are our top 10…

Have a festive family photoshoot

Have a little fun and don your best Christmas outfits for a festive photoshoot! Whether it’s a glitzy dress, a festive suit or an animated Christmas jumper, pop your camera or mobile on timer mode, find a picturesque spot in your home (in front of the Christmas tree or festive fireplace), and one, two, three... say “pigs in blankets”!

Bake a selection of tasty Christmas treats

Nothing beats the smell of sweet, festive cooking drifting throughout the home, and Christmas is the perfect excuse to pull out all the stops when it comes to baking. Why not get the kids involved, and have a mini festive bake off? Think mince pie brownies, Santa cupcakes and gingerbread. Here are some of our favourite Christmassy recipes.

Play some fun party games

There are so many great games to play over Christmas, from Christmas Movie Bingo, Charades and Festive Guess Who, to Reindeer Ring Toss, Jingle Bell Shake and the Oven Mitts Challenge. You can even check out the App Store or Google Play for festive digital games too!

Get crafty with DIY Christmas day table décor

For many, it’s the Christmas dinner that steals the show on December 25th, and how the table décor and centre piece looks is a big deal! Have some crafty fun with making your own decorations out of spare baubles, tinsel and even colourful foliage, or you could make your own centrepiece garland by weaving in some fairy lights, adding scented candles and glitter-dipped pinecones too! Get wrapping and watch your fave festive film

Wrapping up Christmas gifts shouldn’t have to be a chore; in fact, it could make the perfect activity whilst watching your favourite festive film! Put your gifts for each person into separate piles, make sure you have enough wrapping paper and Sellotape, and have some tasty refreshments at the ready – the perfect excuse to have a tipple or two! You’ll have everything wrapped in no time.

Throw a Christmas zoom quiz

2020 has been the year of quizzes, bringing together family, friends and loved ones in such unsettling times. Christmas Day could be the time to throw the ultimate quiz and video call those who you’re not able to spend time with over the festive period. Think BIG and include rounds such as ‘name the missing reindeer’, ‘which celeb did this in 2020’, ‘guess the Christmas film using only emojis’ or ‘Christmas song bingo’. The ideas and fun could be endless!

Create a Christmas playlist for the big day

Nothing beats an upbeat, jolly Christmas playlist! Get the whole family involved and either create a playlist with a range of family-favourites, or how about writing down your favourite tunes on pieces of paper, popping them into a hat and choose the next song by pulling a song from a hat?

Make some tasty mulled refreshments

It’s not Christmas without a mulled wine or two, so why not make your own festive refreshments this year? You can also make child-friendly mulled wine by following this simple alcohol-free mulled wine recipe by BBC Good Food.

Build a gingerbread house

There are so many DIY gingerbread house kits available, so you can skip the boring bit and go straight in with building and decorating. It can be a fun activity for kids as well as adults, and if you or your partner have a competitive streak, why not turn it into a friendly competition?

Plan a festive scavenger hunt

This could be great fun for families, couples and kids, and it’s the perfect activity to keep everyone entertained! Create a list of clues, hide them around the house, with the final clue leading to a gift or a big surprise. Click here for some festive clue ideas to help you out!

It’s also important to spare a thought for those less fortunate and consider donating a gift or volunteer this festive season. There are so many charities with amazing initiatives that are supporting people over Christmas, with some helping to tackle loneliness among elderly people, feeding the homeless, supporting families and children and so much more. Check out either local or national charities that might be important to you and consider an act of kindness this Christmas.
