What Do I Need To Add To My Moving Home Checklist?
The boxes are packed, the removal van is booked and all that is left to do is pick up the keys to your brand new home. You've remembered everything - right? Well, just to be sure, here are a few things to add to your moving-house checklist.
Change of address
Make sure you let others know you are moving by creating a list of places to contact including your doctor's surgery, dentist, your children's school, work, the council and the DVLA.
Don't forget online shopping accounts - the last thing you want is those new things you've ordered to make your house feel like a home, turning up in the wrong place. also remember if your pet is microchipped, this will need changing to ensure your contact details are up to date.
For your friends and family, why not design your own change of address card? You could take a photo of the front door, your new street sign or a set of house keys or get your children to draw a picture of their new home. This is a unique way to let people know you've moved but also gives them something they can pin to their noticeboard till they need it.
Keep the essentials handy
Make sure your everyday items are easy to access on moving day by putting them in a separate bag or box. This could include essential medication, a toothbrush, toilet roll, a towel, your phone charger, a change a clothes - and any other items you know you're going to need on that first night.
Also pack an accessible box with cups, coffee, tea, cutlery etc so you can have a much-needed cuppa and something to eat when you arrive in your new pad. Do some research to find your nearest takeaway so you can order in o the first night and have some bubbles and glasses handy to celebrate the move.
Helping the family settle in
Moving to a new house is very exciting but it can also feel a little daunting for the younger members of your family, so think about how you can help them settle in.
If you can, plan a few visits to the area before you move so things feels a bit more familiar when the big day arrives. Check out the local park, library, and their new school or playgroup, have a walk around the local shops and let them share your excitement about the new adventure.
Help them make their new bedroom feel like home, take a shopping trip to buy fresh bed covers and curtains or a new teddy bear to make it feel special. Don't forget to let them help you unpack some the boxes in their room so they can give all their toys a new place to live.
Finally, a few more things to remember - check your smoke alarms work, read your meter, order a new wheelie bin and finally organise a housewarming party to celebrate that you're in!
