Bring The Colours Of The Rainbow Into Your Home

Neutral colours have become such a staple of interior design that it’s easy to see why we might shy away from brighter shades.

A palette of whites, off-whites and greys is, after all, elegant, timeless and has the power to make our homes feel light and spacious. But, by focussing only on classic colours, we may be missing out on vibrant reds, oranges and greens that can all add texture and personality to different rooms.

Whether you’re ready to embrace a whole new colour scheme, or simply want to introduce a few accents here and there, our guide helps you make the most of the colours of the rainbow in each room of your house this summer.

Red dining room

Feeling brave? Go for theatrical-style curtains or red-painted walls in your dining room and create an opulent feel when you have guests over for dinner. If you’re unsure whether the colour will work in your home, simply add a striking red lamp, cushions or vase that can be changed easily should you change your mind. Red is a striking colour for every season, although it really comes into its own at Christmas when your home is decked out with greens and golds.

Orange living room

The thought of orange walls and soft furnishing may conjure up (unpleasant!) memories of ‘70s interiors, but get it right and you can create a statement in your living room. Décor from this era has made a comeback recently, although you don’t necessarily need to go for wall-to-wall floral or geometric patterns. Instead, contrast neutral colours with a striking retro feature wall or rust-coloured sofa.

Yellow kitchen

As the perfect partner for on-trend grey, yellow is another colour that has grown in popularity over the past few years. From elegant lemon shades to sunflower hues, it never fails to bring a smile to our face, especially when enjoying breakfast in the kitchen on a lazy Sunday morning.

Green bathroom

Avocado bathroom suites still send a shiver down many people’s spines, but that doesn’t mean you should avoid green altogether. Although we’re deviating away from ‘rainbow green’ here, olive and sage colours are extremely soothing when you’re unwinding in the bath. Remember too that some houseplants, including ferns, not only grow well in the bathroom but also add a splash of colourful green to a white backdrop.

Blue bedroom

Whether you go for blue-black, teal or duck-egg, this versatile colour is perfect for everything from dramatic interiors to a calming coastal look. Add fabrics and soft furnishing in different shades of blue and grey to create texture or contrast it with brighter shades such as mustard.

Indigo study

Dark colours can overpower a smaller room, but there’s something about an inky-blue that really helps us to relax and concentrate when working. Less is more in a study, so go for an indigo rug, chair or feature wall and neutral colours elsewhere.

Violet guest room

Visitors who come to stay will love waking up surrounded by vibrant violet, especially on sunny days. Give the space a grown-up look with a dusky-purple chair and a vase of dried flowers.
