Location, Location, Location: Acklam
With everything from sandy beaches and picturesque hikes to historic museums and white-water rafting in close proximity to the town of Acklam, there’s no shortage of ways to fill summer days. Here Julie Ryder, sales advisor at Brookland Park in Acklam, shares her top five things to do in the area.
Roseberry Topping
First up, Roseberry Topping is an iconic National Trust landmark with views across North Yorkshire and Cleveland. Whether you choose to explore the woody surroundings, rock climb to the top or embark on an afternoon hike with tea and cake at the summit, Roseberry Topping is the perfect way to discover more of the area surrounding Acklam and take in the breathtaking views. The hill has been climbed for centuries, spanning back to Viking invaders and ancient Briton, and is just as impressive today.
Tees Barrage International White Water Centre
Located on the River Tees between Stockton and Middlesbrough, the Tees Barrage International White Water Centre offers watersport activities for all ages including stand-up paddle boarding, powerboat trips and raft building.
As well as the watersport activities on offer, the centre is surrounded by wildlife and picturesque walks so you can really make a day of it and be at one with nature. A visit here is a great way to spend a Saturday with friends and family.
Redcar & Cleveland coastline
The beaches of Redcar & Cleveland stretch from the mouth of the Tees to the coast of Staithes. Perhaps one of the best landmarks is Saltburn-by-the-Sea, an old seaside resort and pier. It boasts the oldest water balanced cliff tramway in Britain that is still in operation, which connects the town with the pier below. Spending time by the sea here is a memorable way to explore the surrounding area of Acklam. Enjoy classic English fish and chips, indulge in an ice cream and cool off in the sea from the warm summer weather!
A day out in Yarm
Yarm is a historic market town in North Yorkshire, which offers plenty of bars, cafés and restaurants as well as a selection of boutique shops to explore. For a spot of lunch, head to Cena to enjoy stone-baked pizzas and fresh cocktails. If you’re in the town for dinner, Muse is an award-winning bistro offering seasonal dishes and a relaxed and chilled atmosphere.
For those who appreciate architecture, Yarm features a viaduct which was built in 1848 to extend the Leeds and Thirsk Railway, which can be admired from a pavement café or on a walk around the surrounding area. Yarm is around a 15-minute car journey away from Acklam, so you can explore all it has to offer in no time at all.
