Within short reach of one of the North East’s most famous landmarks, Penshaw Monument, the iconic structure offers stunning views over Wearside. Built in 1844 in memory of John George Lambton, the first Earl of Durham, this 70 foot high replica of the Temple of Hephaestus in Athens is found at the top of Penshaw Hill and can be explored all-year-round, making it a perfect destination for a family walk.

In addition to climbing to the top of Penshaw Hill, there are many ways for you to keep fit and active within the area. To enjoy the great outdoors you could explore Herrington Country Park, one of the largest parks in Sunderland. Overlooked by Penshaw Monument, the park provides the perfect setting for walking, running and cycling as well as hosting special events and open-air concerts.
