Located to the West of Edinburgh, just 10 miles from the city centre, Kirkliston is a town growing in popularity with lots to offer in the immediate locality and surrounding areas.

Its location, close to Newbridge, means it’s within easy commuting distance to Edinburgh Park – Scotland’s largest business park and the whole of the Central Belt of Scotland. In addition, it offers easy access to Edinburgh Airport which is handy for going on holiday abroad or travelling for business.

The oldest recorded property in Kirkliston is the Castle House which contains a marriage stone dated 1683 and Robert Burns is alleged to have stayed there in the summer of 1787 where he inscribed a verse onto a window pane, which reads: The ants about their clod employ their care, And think the business of the world is theirs; Lo: Waxen combs seem palaces to bees. And mites conceive the world to be a cheese.

For food enthusiasts, the Edinburgh School of Food & Wine is based in Newliston and offers a wide variety of full time and part time cookery courses, which is ideal for those looking to broaden their culinary experience. And for those who would like a night off from making dinner or somewhere to go for traditional Sunday lunch, The Newliston Arms serves tasty pub grub.

The town’s Main Street has a variety of local shops and Kirkliston leisure centre is a great way to keep fit as is Kirkliston Bowling Club and there are sailing and water sports amenities at Port Edgar. Local golf clubs include Dundas Parks, a nine-hole course in the grounds of the historic Dundas Castle.

If being adventurous is on the cards, the Edinburgh International Climbing Area in nearby Ratho is great for all the family. With a soft play and ceramics centre which will let kids burn off their energy and release their creative talents, parents can either work out in the gym or indulge is some rock climbing for novices to experts. There is also a café selling home baked goodies which is perfect for reviving flagging energy levels.

 

Every June, the renowned Royal Highland Show takes place at Ingliston, just over seven miles from Kirkliston. As Scotland’s annual farming and countryside showcase, the four day event attracts people from across the country keen to enjoy a day out by seeing livestock and picking up rural and agricultural products and produce. The Royal Highland Show is the perfect place to spend a day out with the family.

 

If you are looking for to enjoy seasonal local produce throughout the year visiting Craigie’s Farm is a must. Craigie’s Farm is just minutes from Kirkliston and has an excellent farm shop, delicatessen, a café, woodland walks and children’s play facilities.

 

The picturesque seaside town of South Queensferry is only two miles from Kirkliston, and is a great place to relax at the weekend, with its enviable views of the Forth Road and Rail Bridges, beach and beautiful coastal walks. You can also spend your time there explore the independent shops and having ice cream before stopping off for some food at Orocco Pier or The Boathouse.

 

When you leave the car at home and explore the local area by foot or bicycle, you get to know it so much better.
