Meet the Team - Michael Jackson
Career profile: Michael Jackson
Build Manager for the Midlands, based in Derby.
Can you describe a bit about what your job involves?
As Build Manager for the Midlands region I have responsibility for ensuring that everything during the build process runs smoothly from a contractual point of view. I oversee the work of the Contracts Managers and although I’m based in our Derby office I spend a great deal of time out and about.
My job includes deciding on staffing requirements, recruiting site staff, monitoring site progress to agreed programmes and providing ongoing support for site managers during the build process. I also liaise with our sub-contractors to ensure they meet their obligations and targets in terms of quality and production.
This is an important stage in the delivery of ‘The Miller Difference’, helping support the delivery of high quality homes within agreed timescales.
How did you get into your chosen career? What experience and qualifications do you have?
My background has always been in the building trade. I have 22 years’ experience in the sector and previously worked as a sub-contract bricklayer before joining Miller Homes in 2000. I started as an assistant site manager here and have developed my skills, becoming a Contracts Manager in May 2013 before recently being appointed Build Manager.
I’m also a member of the Chartered Institute of Building and have a NVQ Level 6 in construction management which has helped me along the way.
What attracted you to a career with Miller Homes?
I was working as a bricklayer when someone approached me about an opportunity at Miller Homes. I jumped at the chance, as Miller Home’s reputation in the industry is second to none. I also knew there was an opportunity to progress on a personal level and I haven’t looked back since. It sounds like a cliché, but no two days are the same and that’s what makes the job so rewarding.
What would you say to someone looking to enter the industry?
Do it! It is a great industry with so much opportunity to progress and learn. To be a success in this sector you have to be open to learning, as you’ll never know it all, so make sure you ask plenty of questions. Decision-making is a huge part of the industry too so often you have to trust your gut and believe in yourself. It’s challenging and fun in equal measure and for the right person the industry is the best place to be.
