Summer of Sport - Round Up 2015

Summer of Sport - Round Up 2015

We’ve had a very busy few months with our Summer of Sport campaign and we’re excited to announce that our national winner is Beechcroft Tennis and Multi Sports Club! The Summer of Sport cash boost will be used by the club to launch new walking football sessions for the less mobile.

The Solihull based club walked away with the top prize of £1000 after impressing our judges with how the money would help them undertake a unique activity which offers a real benefits to the less mobile within the community.

Our judges were looking for examples of how the sporting clubs in each community would make the most of the funding and how the cash boost would directly support the learning and fitness of its members and specific samples of how the money would be used. The national judging panel, which included former Mr Universe and Miller Homes employee, Andy Polhill; former Leeds United footballer, Paul Reaney; and Miller Homes Procurement and Sustainability Director, Garry McDonald; decided that Beechcroft Tennis and Multi Sports Club were worthy winners.

Until two years ago Beechcroft Tennis and Multi Sports Club was in need of serious repair. Following renovation of the outdoor facilities and a small number of committed volunteers, the club started to thrive. Since the renovation Beechcroft Tennis and Multi Sports Club has become a new hub for walking football. Over the past six months they have added five sessions and gained over 100 regular participants. This has provided many older members of the community with a place to go where they can make new friends and keep active.

Well done also to our five regional winners, who will each receive £500 for their club:

  • Scotland – Peebles RFC, Peebles
  • North East - Bedlingtonshire Golf Club, Bedlington, Northumberland
  • North West – Knights American Cheer, Warrington, Cheshire
  • Yorkshire – Hull High Fliers Trampoline Club, Hull
  • Southern - Snipers Cheerleading Academy, Hounsdown, South Hampshire

Thanks to all of our participants and judges in making this year’s Summer of Sport competition great!
