Location, Location, Location - Midlothian

Midlothian is a jewel in the crown as it offers all the benefits of a rural lifestyle, but is close enough to Edinburgh to enjoy all the delights a city has to offer.

Not only are there lots of opportunities to take advantage of scenic walks and breath-taking views, but the area boasts an array of historical buildings, such as castles, palaces and abbeys. Most famous, and definitely worth a visit, is the iconic 15th century Rosslyn Chapel which became world renowned after featuring in the 2006 film The Da Vinci Code.

For those who enjoy the great outdoors, Vogrie Country Park is a great place to go with the family and take advantage of woodland walks, play areas, picnics and golfing, whereas creepy crawly enthusiasts can make their way to Edinburgh Butterfly & Insect World. Not only is this tropical rainforest filled with an array of fluttering insects, but there are also other items worth getting up close to like snakes, scorpions and spiders. Kids love it and it is educational for them too.

For action-seeking families, Midlothian Snowsports Centre is great fun. Offering the opportunity to ski or snowboard on a dry slope, having a go at tubing is guaranteed to raise some laughter from adults and squeals from kids. Who knew that sitting on a giant inflatable donut could produce lots of entertainment!

The luxurious Melville Castle hotel is a popular choice for weddings, but this family-run venue is wonderful place to go for a special occasion dinner followed by a stroll around the perfectly manicured grounds.
