As we continue our blog series highlighting some of the most desirable places to live in the UK, we take a look at Tangmere in West Sussex.
Lying close to the South East coast, the village of Tangmere is just a short drive away from the cathedral city of Chichester and within easy reach of Portsmouth and Brighton. Those looking for a peaceful rural setting, while still being close to local amenities, will find just that at the Bader Heights development.
The village dates back to Anglo-Saxon times and is recorded in the Domesday Book of 1086. One of the key landmarks in Tangmere is the picturesque St Andrew’s Church. Built in the 12th century, it has been renovated numerous times over the years most recently with a stained glass window to commemorate the pilots of the Second World War.
Tangmere is a close-knit area, with the Village Centre providing a hub for events and activities throughout the year. You will also discover an array of community organisations, including the WI, a cricket club, history group and Scouts, so you will make friends in no time.
However, Tangmere is perhaps best known for its role in the Second World War when it was home to RAF Tangmere. Airmen and women contributed significantly to the war effort, helping the allies to secure victory in the Battle of Britain in 1940.
Today, Tangmere Military Aviation Museum stands as a memorial to the pilots who served during the conflict. This popular tourist attraction offers visitors of all ages a fascinating insight into this era, with displays of military aircraft, aviation memorabilia and flight simulators.
Just a short stroll or taxi ride away, in the nearby village of Oving, is The Gripple Inn. This 16th century thatch-roofed country pub has its own brewery tap and promises roaring log fires in the winter and a pretty garden for the long summer evenings.
The village is served by Tangmere Primary School, and has a number of nearby secondary schools including Orminston Six Villages Academy and Chichester High School. Other amenities include Tangmere Medical Centre and two convenience stores.
Chichester is also easily accessible by car and bus which means you’re ideally placed for all the major shops, restaurants and cultural venues including Chichester Festival Theatre and the world-famous Chichester Cathedral.
