Become a Greener Cleaner

As homeowners are becoming more and more environmentally conscious, there is little wonder that they are now looking for a more cost efficient and eco-friendly way to maintain their homes.
On average, a UK household spends a total of £163 per year on everyday cleaning products. In our effort to become A Better Place, we have compiled a list of eco-friendly and effective tips that will help you keep your house looking and feeling squeaky clean at a fraction of the cost.
• You have to start somewhere and we recommend dusting! Start at the top and work your way down to battle the dust bunnies. Use a microfibre duster for the best results as unlike a cloth or feather duster, microfibre cloths attract and hold dust. They are also washable, so you can reuse it. Instead of forking out on a supermarket polish to use afterwards, mix the juice of 1 lemon with a teaspoon of water and a teaspoon of olive oil. Lemon naturally cuts through grease, and olive oil will condition your wood furniture.
• Summer is coming so that means it’s time to take down any out of date seasonal décor and store it away until next year. To help you into that summertime feeling, swap your air freshener for a light and airy scent. You can even get creative and make your own! The combination of lemons and baking soda is a great way to combat odours. Simply cut a lemon into wedges and place into a bowl of baking soda to infuse a fresh citrus aroma into the air.
• Remember making a volcano for your school science project? A mixture of baking soda and vinegar can be used in a variety of ways. A burnt pot or pan can be brought back to life with this simple concoction. Soak in this mixture for about an hour and then scrape away to reveal a pot that looks as good as new. This mixture can also be used to unblock any stubborn drains and the homemade fizz will help battle lime scale.
• We’ve all spilt something on our carpets. If it’s red wine or blackcurrant juice, soda water and salt are great ways to help remove stains. Pour onto the stain and pat with paper towels until no colour transfers.
In addition to saving money and eliminating the need for chemical based products, these tips can also help members of your family who suffer from allergies or are sensitive to certain products. These environmentally friendly ways to clean the home can be gentler on the skin and reduce allergens while at the same time helping the cause for a more sustainable planet.
