Location, Location, Location - Silsoe
Continuing our blog series focusing on some of our fabulous locations across the country, our hotspot this week is the beautiful village of Silsoe in the county of Bedfordshire.
Situated midway between Bedford and Luton, Silsoe has a population of approximately 1,729 and is home to our picturesque Archers Fields development.
It is suggested that Silsoe’s name originates as Sifel’s hoh or hill, probably of Anglo Saxon derivation. Although never very large, the village grew over the centuries as a location from which the manors of Wrest, Newbury and others could find the necessary labourers to work their land.
Today Silsoe is a superb location for walking, there are a number of planned circular walks from 3 miles to just under 7 miles, which take in many points of interest and give you a real insight into the history of the village. It’s also great for cycling and exploring the surrounding villages. Within Silsoe the large Millennium Green, located alongside the High Street, provides a tranquil place to walk or enjoy sports and games. Around 15 minutes walk to the west of the development, Wrest Park Gardens is one of the pinnacles of formal landscape garden design in England.
Sport and leisure is well catered for with a wide range of amenities at Flitwick Leisure Centre which is around 4 miles away from Archers Fields. These include a 25 metre 4 lane swimming pool and a separate learners pool, squash courts, a 55 station fitness suite, dance studio, a large sports hall and external football pitches. If you like a game of golf the nearby Beadlow Manor Golf and Country Club offers two mature 18 hole courses and a floodlit driving range. There are two traditional pubs in the village both situated in the high street just a few minutes walk from the development.
In addition to a post office, a farm shop and a hairdresser there is also a convenience store in the village and a large supermarket in Flitwick. A wider selection of high street and specialist stores can be found in the town centres of Hitchin, Bedford and Luton which are all within 10 miles. Silsoe has its own Lower School for years one to four and it also contains a pre-school housed in its own classroom within the school. There is a wide choice of alternative nursery and primary school provision and middle and secondary schools in the surrounding villages and towns.
