Priors Green

Entered via a delightful access road flanked by open space and ponds, Priors Green is a collection of new homes set in beautiful rural surroundings on the eastern edge of the village of Takeley. With its ambience of fresh air and broad horizons, however, the development is nevertheless extremely convenient for travel both to London and beyond.

Local history
Nearby Takeley is an ancient village, tracing its roots right back beyond the Domesday Book and Roman connections to Paleolithic times. The area’s strong sense of community and tradition lives on in one of Britain’s most celebrated customs, the Dunmow Flitch, a contest held every four years. Couples who have been married for at least a year and a day come to testify to their devotion and fidelity. Successful couples are carried shoulder-high to an ancient chair in the Market Place, where they are awarded a Flitch, or side of bacon.

Shopping
The two towns flanking Priors Green offer an excellent choice of shopping environments. Bishop’s Stortford to the west is the larger centre, with a wider range of high street outlets and modern facilities, while Great Dunmow to the east is a traditional market town with a fascinating choice of specialist and independent retailers. Great Dunmow’s Tuesday market presents an opportunity to buy fresh fruit and vegetables as well as wide range of other goods, and there is also a large 24-hour Tesco supermarket in the centre of the town.

Leisure
The rural surroundings of Priors Green make an ideal base for people who enjoy walking and cycling, and the nearby Hatfield Nature Reserve, around a mile from Priors Green, is a very special jewel amongst outdoor attractions. One of the few remaining examples of a medieval hunting forest in Britain, it includes over 1000 acres of woods and pastures with 400 year-old pollarded trees, two ornamental lakes and an attractive picnic area. Today the Forest is a designated Site of Special Scientific Interest and a National Nature Reserve. There is also a selection of indoor amenities in easy reach of Priors Green. Great Dunmow, around three miles to the east, has a comprehensive Leisure Centre with a swimming pool, gymnasium, badminton and squash courts, five-a-side football pitches, Astroturf pitches and cafe and crèche facilities. To the west, Bishop’s Stortford offers a five-screen cinema, the Empire, and the exciting Rhodes Arts Complex includes a theatre, gallery and museum.

Education
Takeley’s original Penny Village School was in operation by 1869, although the present building was constructed on the pleasant Roseacres site in 1988. The local secondary school, the Helena Romanes School, is set in a beautiful 35-acre site on the northern edge of Great Dunmow.

Transport
Priors Green is less than four miles from the M11 motorway, giving easy access to both London and Cambridge. Stansted Airport is only a short drive away, and the airport has an express rail service with London, reaching Liverpool Street Station in 45 minutes. There are also excellent bus services from both Stansted Airport and Bishop’s Stortford bus station.

Health Care
There is a good selection of medical services around three miles away in Great Dunmow.
