History
First recorded as the site of a battle between Picts and Scots in the year 681, Mauchline has a fascinating history. It was a stronghold of the Covenanter movement, and later the source both of box-work known as Mauchline Ware and of curling stones. However, it is for its connections with Burns that the village is most renowned. Burns spent the most productive period of his life at nearby Mossgeil Farm, and the village and surrounding area is rich in places associated with his writings.
Leisure
Mauchline is a superb base from which to explore the local countryside, with a developing network of paths incorporating
some long-range cycle routes and river walks. The beaches and attractions of the Ayrshire coast are also in easy reach, and there are many fine golf-courses in the area, including the Ballochmyle Course just two miles from Mauchline. The village has a games hall and bowling, angling and curling clubs, and there are a number of cafes and pubs, including the Loudoun Arms, an old coaching inn, and the historic Poosie Nansie's Inn, the setting for Burns' 'Jolly Beggars' cantata.
Shopping
There is a newsagent, Old Avenue Stores, just yards from the development and a choice of supermarkets, a chemist and a post office in Loudon Street, less than half a mile away. Mauchline also has a bank and a choice of take-away food outlets. A wider selection of shops can be found in Kilmarnock and Ayr, each under half an hour's drive away. |
