Clough Mills Nestling amongst picturesque hills at the confluence of the River Leithen and the River Tweed, Innerleithen has a special charm. Said to have been founded by St Ronan in the year 736, the town is rich in history and romance. Robert Burns praised its spa waters, and Sir Walter Scott used it as the setting for St Ronan's Well. In easy reach of Edinburgh, Innerleithen today is a peaceful residential town with an exceptionally vibrant community life.
Local history and heritage Innerleithen and its surrounding area have featured heavily in both the history and the literature of the Scottish Borders. There are rich associations with the work of James Hogg and Sir Walter Scott, and St Ronan's Wells is today the site of an exhibition celebrating the town's story and its connections with the authors. Traquair House, two miles from the town, is the oldest continuously-inhabited house in Scotland, and is famous both for its Bear Gates, closed after a visit from Bonnie Prince Charlie and never to be opened until a Stuart is returned to the throne, and its brewery, which produces Traquair House Ales. The house and gardens are open to the public, and the annual Traquair House Fair attracts visitors from throughout the Borders and the central belt. Another attraction in the town is the superbly restored Robert Smail's Printing Works, where visitors can watch how printing was done at the start of the 20th century.
Education Innerleithen Primary School, which has a nursery class, is located in a beautiful setting on St Ronan's Road, around half a mile from Clough Mills, and the local secondary is Peebles High School.
Bars and restaurants Innerleithen has three fine traditional inns including St Ronan's Hotel and the Tweedside Hotel, both in the High Street, just a short stroll away from Clough Mills. There is an even wider choice of pubs, hotels and eateries in Peebles.
Sport and leisure Peebles swimming pool, around six miles away, is a superb 25m swimming-pool set in beautiful parkland, with glass walls so visitors can appreciate the magnificent panoramas as they swim. There are also swimming and gym facilities at Cardrona Country Club, and Stobo Castle Health Club, which offers programmes ranging from exercise and fitness to luxurious massages and beauty treatments, around 10 miles away on the western side of Peebles.
Shopping Innerleithen High Street, just five minutes walk from the development, offers a range of food shopping and convenience stores to cover your everyday needs, in addition to more unusual retailers, such as the art dealers at the Chapel Street Gallery. The short trip into Peebles opens up a wider selection of independent shops, – including excellent butchers, bakers and delicatessens as well as specialist dealers and supermarkets.
Outdoor activities Innerleithen is surrounded by miles of beautiful countryside, with endless opportunities for walking, cycling and riding, including riverside paths and a network of waymarked paths and trails. Glentress Forest is acknowledged as having some of the best mountain-biking routes and facilities in the UK, and there is an equestrian centre at Kailzie House Farm. Both Glentress Forest and Kailzie House Farm are around three miles west of Innerleithen. Golfing facilities in the area include the town's own beautiful nine-hole course and the magnificent 18-hole course at Cardrona Country Club between Innerleithen and Peebles.
Transport Innerleithen is less than an hour's drive from Edinburgh, and there is a good bus network throughout the Borders, with approximately hourly services into the capital.
