Local history Great Barford has a recorded history dating back to the Domesday book, and grew in importance as a crossing point of the River Ouse. Its bridge dates back at least five hundred years, although it was substantially altered in the 19th century to create today's picturesque structure with its 17 arches forming an elegant gateway to the village. The bridge is one of England's Scheduled Ancient Monuments. The charming High Street and its surroundings contain several listed buildings, including the impressive All Saints Church with its 15th century tower.
Village life The new road bypass has restored the tranquil village atmosphere to Great Barford, taking the noise and congestion away from the High Street without any loss of convenience. Peace has returned to the area around the Village Green and along the nearby banks of the Ouse, a popular place to relax and watch the colourful boats passing along the river, and also a favourite spot for local anglers. There are three pubs in the village. The Anchor is close to the bridge and the church while the Golden Cross, which incorporates a Chinese restaurant, and the Beehive with its traditional pub games are at the other end of the village, close to the development. The High Street is also the location of the village shop and post office.
