What should I be doing 1 month before I move in?
Gas, electricity, water, telephone :
You should arrange for gas, electricity, water and your telephone to be disconnected or the meter to be read on the day you move out and ask for bills to be made up to that date. We will arrange for these supplies to be connected in your new home before you move in. However, you'll have to arrange to have you own telephone line connected and activated.
Notice to your landlord :
If you rent accommodation, give notice in writing to your landlord of the date of vacation. (You may need to do this earlier than four weeks - please check your rental agreement)
Doctors, dentists, schools etc :
If you are moving from the area, start looking for doctors and dentists and inform your existing practitioners that you are leaving.
If you have a family, advise your children's schools of your change of address or start looking for new schools in the area.
Removal firms or DIY removal :
If you're thinking of using a removal firm do get more than one quotation. For names try Yellow Pages or the British Association of Removers (3 Churchill Court, 58 Station Road, North Harrow, Middlesex HA2 7SA; Tel: 020 8 861 3331).
If you are 'doing-it-yourself' check van hire and help of friends and family. Remember if you are arranging your own removals to check on the insurance offered by the van hire company and that they are fully covered for loss and/or breakage. If you are transporting the goods yourself, enquire about 'goods in transit' insurance with your insurer.
Should you need to store any items until your new home is ready for occupation, contact the British Association of Removers and they will recommend reputable storage companies.
Confirm all details of the move and/or storage in writing, retaining a copy for your own reference and keep and inventory of all items stored.
Informing people about your change of address :
Prepare a list of people you have to inform of your move. Ask your local Post Office for a copy of their special leaflet regarding mail redirection.
